August 2012 update

We have published new End of Life Care Local Authority Profiles at top tier local authority level. These include an expanded set of indicators - over 50 - including social care indicators for the first time. They are also available in downloadable PDF format - one for each top tier local authority in England.

December 2011 update

We have updated these End of Life Care Local Authority Profiles with 2010 data - the latest available nationally - and have made some other changes to improve the tool. To find out what's changed, read End of Life Care Profiles 2011 - What's changed?

About the Local Authority Profiles (pre-2009 local authority boundaries)

The End of Life Care Local Authority Profiles present data on place of death and cause of death, by age and sex, for each Local Authority in England using the InstantAtlas mapping tool. The data can be viewed in map, chart and table format. To generate comparisons at a more local level, the Local Authority boundaries set before April 2009 (before larger Unitary Authorities were created) have been used. We will be publishing Top Tier Local Authority Profiles later in 2012, which will include social care indicators for the first time.

The tool has been designed to make it easy to compare statistics across Local Authority areas. The profiles are used by policy makers, commissioners and providers of end of life care services, among others, to identify areas and populations of need.

To download the profiles*, click on the links in the left-hand column in the Table below. You can also view the metadata guides for each profile by clicking on the links in the right-hand column. The metadata describe how the indicators were generated and provide data sources, definitions and caveats.

There is also a User Guide that explains how to use the InstantAtlas mapping tool.

Important note on place of death data

These profiles use Office for National Statistics (ONS) data for place of death. The ONS categorises place of death by address. As a result, it is not possible to distinguish between hospital deaths and deaths in specialist palliative care units/ hospices that are based in hospitals. This means that, in many areas, the indicator showing hospital deaths will be an over-count and hospice deaths an under-count. This is a known limitation of the data.
