Report on dementia deaths highlights new challenges for end of life care

Care homes will face particular challenges in responding to the inevitable rise in dementia, including Alzheimer’s, a report suggests today.
The report, Deaths from Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and senility in England, published by the National End of Life Care Intelligence Network (NEoLCIN), says commissioners and providers across adult health and social care will be faced with meeting the needs of more people dying with these conditions as the population ages. It confirms that, unlike other conditions, most people with dementia, including Alzheimer’s, die in care homes.

Ageing population requires new approaches to end of life care, report warns

Providers and commissioners of end of life care must address the implications of a predicted large increase in the numbers of people dying at a very old age, according to a report published today.
The report, Deaths in Older Adults in England, produced by the National End of Life Care Intelligence Network (NEoLCIN), analyses the numbers of deaths in people aged over 75, broken down into five-year age bands up to the over 90s. It also looks at where and from what conditions older people die.

New reports highlight variations in place of death across England

A new report from the National End of Life Care Intelligence Network reveals that whether you die in hospital or your own home can depend on where you live. See the media release.
The report, Variations in Place of Death in England, is one of three published today.
Two others look at Deaths from Neurodegenerative Diseases in England, 2002 to 2008 and Deaths from Renal Diseases in England, 2001 to 2008.
Together, the reports show how a range of factors including age, sex, cause of death and socieconomic status can determine whether a person dies in their home or hospital or other place of death.
