End of life care for people with learning disabilities

There are often problems co-ordinating end of life care for people with learning disabilities. They are less likely to have their pain well managed and less likely to access specialist palliative care services. This event will look at what is known about end of life care for people with learning disabilities and what can be done to improve this. Topics to be covered include pain management for people with complex needs and the difference setting makes to end of life care outcomes. There will be new data and research findings shared about end of life care for people with learning disabilities. Speakers include Irene Tuffrey-Wijne, who has extensive clinical and research experience in the field of learning disabilities and palliative care.

This free all day event is aimed at clinicians from primary and secondary health care settings, palliative care services and learning disability services, commissioners and service managers, family members and paid supporters.


 

End of Life Care: Legal Issues Masterclass

Monday 13 March 2017, De Vere West One Conference Centre, London

This one-day course will provide healthcare practitioners involved in palliative and elderly care an introduction to the legal framework in which they practice. The day will cover the basic statutory and common law framework that governs how a healthcare professional can treat and care for those at the end of their lives. Through case studies the implications of best interest assessments and the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) will be explored.

Who Cares for Carers?

7 February 2017, The Guildhall, Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland

This conference is aimed at health and social care staff, voluntary community groups and individual carers who have contact with people who have life limiting illnesses and/or palliative care needs. It is focused on helping delegates to better understand the needs of those who are looking after someone at the end of life. Carers will be encouraged to participate, interact and engage in discussions and information around financial, emotional or practical advice and how they can work together with professionals to support them and influence change in policy and practice.
