Proportion of deaths in usual place of residence

This is a Key Performance Indicator for end of life care. It focuses on place of death, namely 'usual place of residence', as a proxy marker for quality. It is based on death registration information collected by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The indicator is produced quarterly on a rolling 12-month basis for all primary care organisations in England. Updates will add the most recent quarter of data and drop the oldest. Data will be publically available approximately 5 months after the end of each quarter.

The End of Life Care Strategy sets out the direction of travel to provide all adults nearing the end of life, regardless of diagnosis, access to high quality care and supporting more people to realise their choices and preferences for care. Survey data suggests that many people would, given the choice, prefer to die at home and few wish to die in hospital.
