Advice and information
"How people die remains in the memory of those who live on."
– Dame Cicely Saunders (1918–2005)
If you are a patient, carer, or concerned about end of life care, there are a number of organisations that provide expert advice and information. You can find a useful list of these on the National End of Life Care Programme website. The range of topics covered includes: information on care homes; support groups; respite care; bereavement; spirituality; hospices; and palliative care.
There are also a number of organisations that provide information tailored to specific illnesses or specific support needs. These include:
Marie Curie Cancer Care
The National Council for Palliative Care
Macmillan Cancer Support
Motor Neurone Disease Association
St Christopher’s Hospice
Care Quality Commission
Help the Hospices
The Department for Work and Pensions website also has useful information about benefits.
This is only a sample of the websites that you might find useful.
You may also like to contact your local Primary Care Trust, GP or key worker in hospital to find information about services and support in your local area.
The National End of Life Care Intelligence Network was commissioned to support the implementation of the National End of Life Care Strategy (2008), which is aimed at improving end of life care for adults in England. The Network therefore does not currently have a remit to provide information on end of life care for children. However, this may change in the future. ACT provides support for families and carers of children at the end of life.
